Where Every Family Belongs

Through a Strong Kids family membership, Nyreyak and her five children have found more than access to a safe facility; they've found connection, confidence, and community. A place where she knows her and her family truly belong. 

Each weekend, Nyreyak and her kids head to the Downtown Y, where laughter, movement, and connection fill their time together. Whether they are playing basketball, jumping on the bouncy castle, or simply enjoying the welcoming atmosphere, these visits have become the highlight of their week.  

For Nyreyak, receiving a Strong Kids family membership has meant barrier-free access to a safe, supportive space where her children can thrive. It has removed financial obstacles and opened the door to opportunities that foster both physical activity and meaningful relationships. 

“This is what we look forward to every week,” Nyreyak shares. “The kids are always so excited to come here. It gives us something really positive to do together.” 

A big part of what makes their experience so special is the people. Nyreyak and her children consistently speak about the kindness and warmth of the staff. One staff member in particular, youth program supervisor Mencer, has made a lasting impact on the family. He goes above and beyond to ensure the children feel seen, included, and valued — playing basketball with them, organizing activities, bringing snacks, and taking the time to build genuine connections. To the kids, Mencer is more than a staff member; he feels like family. 

“The staff here are so friendly, but Mencer really stands out,” Nyreyak says. “He treats my kids like they matter. Like they belong.” 

The feeling is mutual. Mencer shares that the family brightens his days just as much. 

“They change my day every time I see them,” Mencer says. “I love being part of their lives. I just try to make it as fun and welcoming as possible for them — like they’re part of my own family.” 

Through the Strong Kids membership, Nyreyak’s family has gained more than access to a facility — they’ve gained a sense of belonging, a supportive community, and moments of joy that they look forward to week after week. 

“It means everything to us,” Nyreyak adds. “We’re so grateful for this opportunity and for the connections we’ve made here.”
