Judy's Story

After rediscovering her strength through the Y Winnipeg’s low-impact fitness and strength classes, Judy Lutz has found more than a workout—she’s found a community and motivation.

“I plan on getting back to the shape I was in when I was 30—and I think I can do it,” says Judy Lutz.

When Judy joined the Downtown Y last August, her goal was simple: to feel strong again.

“I used to work out a lot in my 30s and 40s, but I let things go during the pandemic,” she says. “I developed some back issues and started physio at the spine clinic. Once I began getting stronger again, I knew I needed to keep it going—so I joined the Y.”

Judy started with the weight machines before joining group classes like Low Impact Synrgy and resistance training—and she’s never looked back.

“These classes are excellent because they build muscle and bone strength,” she says. “It’s changed my life. I’m in much better shape than I was a year ago, and I just plan on getting better and better.”

She’s even taken up powerlifting with a small group of friends from her class—guided by instructor Noor, who recently represented Manitoba in competition. “There’s four of us now who lift together. It’s so motivating, and the instructors are amazing—Javi, John, Noor, Emilio. They keep us going.”

For Javier Izaguirre Lopez, a Y instructor who leads several low-impact programs, the benefits go beyond physical fitness.

“Our programs are designed so everyone can participate,” says Javier. “We adapt each exercise to different mobility levels, so whether it’s using a lower step or modifying a TRX movement, everyone gets a safe and effective workout. But the real impact is social—members come to see each other every day. They build friendships, community, and confidence.”

That sense of belonging is what keeps Judy coming back.

“We all motivate each other—we’re around the same age and just have fun,” she says. “The Y looks after us. They’re always introducing new classes and programs, and there’s no better place for older adults to get active.”
