Turning Passion into a Profession

When Alicia arrived in Canada from Ecuador, she was looking for a fresh start. What she found at the Y was the chance to transform a lifelong love of swimming into a rewarding new career.
“The YMCA is like a big family. They understand what happens with all people, no matter who they are or where they come from.” – Alicia Jaimes
Alicia Jaimes didn’t expect her career in Canada to start in a swimming pool. Back in Ecuador, she had worked in banking, but her love for the water was never far from her mind.
When she moved to Winnipeg, a lifeguard job at the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg was her first big opportunity. “It was more than just a job,” Alicia says. “It helped me feel confident in a new country and gave me a place to belong.”
That lifeguarding role led to something even more meaningful—becoming a certified YMCA swim instructor. “Being a swimming instructor has been deeply rewarding,” she says. “Not only have I contributed to the physical and emotional development of my students, but I’ve also learned valuable lessons from each of them.”
Alicia is passionate about the Y’s inclusive approach. “They didn’t just see me as a newcomer,” she says. “They saw my potential—and gave me the support I needed to grow.”
“Alicia is a shining example of how aquatics can empower newcomers. She’s not just teaching strokes—she’s building confidence and creating community in every lesson,” says Andrea Usackis, Aquatic Programs Specialist.
Today, Alicia continues to inspire others, especially youth and families who are new to Canada. “Swimming is more than a sport,” she says. “It’s a tool for wellness, growth, and connection.”
