Don’t forget, you must have an active Y membership to register in a program or pre-book a spot in a drop-in activity.

We understand that you might have a few questions on how Spring programming will work with restrictions in place but don’t worry we have you covered!  We’ve provided answers to some of the common questions that come up, don’t see an answer you need? Please contact any of our branches as we would love to help you out!

Fitness Guidelines

  • Are program participants required to wear a mask?

Masks must be worn by all persons while attending YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg branches and programs. This applies to all visitors and participants in our branches and programs except children 5 years of age and under. If you have a condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, please speak to a member of our staff team.

  • How many participants will be in each program activity?

To allow for proper physical-distancing and to follow Provincial capacity restrictions, each program activity will have a reduced number of participants for Spring programs with one instructor per class.

  • Can I stay and watch my child(s) activities?

No. Due to Provincial capacity restrictions and physical distancing requirements there will be no viewing areas available.  A Parent or guardian is asked to bring their child(ren) into the branch to check them in with our program staff. Once your child(ren) is checked in, the parent or guardian must exit the branch unless they are participating in a class or working out in the fitness area.

Parents must stay and wear masks for preschool programs. This is to reduce points of contact between the instructor and children in the class.

It is IMPERATIVE that the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg have the current contact information for all participants should we be required to call the parent/guardian.

  • Will the locker rooms be accessible?

Yes, locker rooms will be available with physical-distancing and enhanced cleaning measures in place. To ensure physical-distancing, not all lockers will be available to use.

  • Are the water fountains open? Washrooms available?

Our washrooms and water bottle refill stations are open but the water fountains remain closed. Participants are asked to bring an individual water bottle.

  • What are the Preschool program guidelines?

In addition to the overall Youth Program Guidelines, please note the following for the preschool program.

    • Parent participation is required for preschool participants (3-5 yrs)
    • Parents required to remain in the building, either in the fitness centre or designated waiting area
    • Ratios lowered based on age
  • What are the Youth 6-12 program guidelines?

In addition to the overall Fitness Program Guidelines, please note the following for the youth ages 6-12  years.

    • Hands free coaching (spotting)
    • Participants will have assigned equipment to use for the duration of the class and a designated space to place them when not in use.
    • Training aids and/or props that cannot be disinfected easily (ie: scarves, parachute) will not be used.
    • Y staff will be responsible for the setup, distribution and disinfecting of equipment
    • Scrimmage and participant interaction time will be limited.
    • Weekly sessions will focus on skill development and play
    • No end of session performance or tournaments

Aquatic Guidelines

  • How many swimmers will there be in each class?

To allow for proper physical-distancing and to follow capacity restrictions, each swim class will have a reduced number of participants for Spring programs with one instructor per class.

  • Will swim instructors/lifeguards be wearing masks?

Swim Instructors will be wearing face shields in the water and will maintain physical distancing requirements with only brief interactions during class. A brief interaction is defined as contact for less than 10 minutes of time being less than 2 metres apart

  • Can I stay and watch my child(s) swim lesson?
    1. No. Due to Provincial capacity restrictions and social distancing requirements there will be no viewing areas available. A parent or guardian is asked to bring their child(ren) who don't require assistance in getting changed into the branch to check them in with our Aquatic Attendant who will then escort them onto the pool deck. For the younger children who require assistance in the changeroom, a parent/guardian is required to help the child(ren) change into a swimsuit before checking them in with the Aquatic Attendant. Once your child(ren) is checked in, you must exit the branch unless you are participating in a class or working out in the fitness area.
    2. Once the class is over one parent/guardian will be allowed to collect the child and assist them in the changeroom.
    3. A designated viewing area for parents/guardians of pre-school age children ONLY will be available while class is in session

It is IMPERATIVE that the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg have the current contact information for all participants should we be required to call the parent/guardian.

  • How will instructors provide hands-on swim lessons with restrictions in place?

Swim Instructors will be wearing face shields in the water and will maintain physical distancing requirements with only brief interactions during class. A brief interaction is defined as contact for less than 10 minutes of time being less than 2 metres apart.

  • Is my child(ren) required to wear a mask?

Masks must be worn by all persons while attending YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg branches and programs including while on pool deck. This applies to all visitors and participants in our branches and programs except children under the age of 5 years. Parent/guardian are asked to bring a small re-sealable plastic bag with child's name to keep mask in while in the pool. If you have a condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, please speak to a member of our staff team at the front desk.

  • I don't know what swim level to register for.

We can help with that! Use our Find Your Swim Level tool - complete the questionnaire and your answers will guide you to the appropriate level to register your swimmer in.

  • Will there be equipment available to use for Aquafit classes?

In short, yes! However, equipment is not to be shared between participants or between participant and instructor and will be sanitized between classes.

  • Will the locker rooms be accessible?

Yes. A limited number of lockers will be available for members to use.  We are encouraging parents/guardians of the swim program take their child's belongings with them when they leave the building during swim lessons.

Note: All child membership fees will automatically begin again on April 4 with the payment method and payment frequency we have on file, unless we have previously received written notice indicating you would like your child membership to be put on hold
