At the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, we believe our charitable mission extends far beyond our borders.
We are proud to be part of a global movement, involving countries around the world, working to engage youth in local and global social justice issues!
Since 1973, we have worked in cooperation with YMCAs in other global communities. These partnerships allow us to build capacity within our Global Partners organizations while fostering a culture of exchange and education here at home. Our two main partnerships are with Uruguay and Mexico.
Since 1973, in partnership with YMCA Regina and YMCA-YWCA of Guelph, we have worked with YMCA Uruguay:
- providing assistance in the development of their fitness facility in Ciudad de la Costa,
- supporting leadership, personnel and governance training, and
- securing funding for the YMCA of San Jose’s children and youth centre for after school programming for youth at risk.
To help develop an understanding of other cultures, we have participated in multiple youth exchanges with YMCA Montevideo.
Since 2005, we have supported the YMCA Mexican Federation and their Homes for Migrant Youth located in Tijuana and Juarez, Mexico. With matching funding assistance from the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation, this project responds to the needs of youth who have been repatriated to Mexico after crossing the US/ Mexico border without proper documentation by providing food, safe shelter, counselling and reunification services with their families.
