Update as of May 27, 2020

Today the Province of Manitoba confirmed that under Phase 2 of their Restoring Safe Services plan, fitness facilities would be able to reopen on June 1; however, we will not be reopening our branches just yet.

Your voices are critical in our reopening considerations. We’re putting the finishing touches on our member survey and will share that with you as soon as possible. Stay tuned!

Thank you for your continued patience and support. We know many of you are anxious to return, and we’re anxious to welcome you back. We will continue to provide updates as we have more information to share.

Update as of May 21, 2020

Today the Province of Manitoba announced a draft plan that would see fitness centres potentially included in phase two of its reopening plan. Right now, the public is being asked to provide their input on the Province’s draft plan by visiting engagemb.ca. The Province will use that information to help determine what can be appropriately opened in phase two of their plan, which is currently set to begin on June 1.

Regardless of the Province’s decision, our number one priority is for the Y to continue to be a safe space for staff, our members and the community as a whole. We will only reopen when we determine that it’s the right decision for our community.

We will keep you informed of information as it becomes available to us. Thank you for your continued support through this very difficult time.

Update as of May 6, 2020

· Posted on our Facebook and Twitter accounts

Update as of April 13, 2020

  • The Province of Manitoba has mandated that all non-essential businesses remain closed until at least April 28, 2020
  • All HFA accounts are on hold and payments are not being withdrawn
  • All child-care accounts are on hold and payments are not being withdrawn, except for those essential services families using our child-care services
  • We are continuing with Camp Stephens planning at this time, including payments
  • We are continuing with Summer Day Camp planning at this time, including payments

Update as of April 8, 2020

The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg has been in continuous conversations with government and health authorities, as well as other Ys across Canada since the onset of COVID-19.

When we closed our on-site facilities in an effort to help flatten the curve of COVID-19,  we hoped we would be able to re-open on Monday, April 13. A lot has transpired since we closed, including Provincial closure mandates for non-essential businesses, required social distancing, and – unfortunately – a greater spread of COVID-19 in and around Winnipeg. Together, this means that we will not be able to re-open our facilities on Monday, April 13 as planned and we will only re-open when the health agencies say it is safe to do soYour health, fitness & aquatics memberships will remain on hold until we resume normal operations and no fees will be charged to you.

Continued closures isn’t news anyone wants to hear; however, it is in everyone’s best interest. We all need to do our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 for everyone’s health and safety.

More information regarding re-opening will be shared as it becomes available. Please be sure to check our website, ywinnipeg.ca, for up-to-date information and follow our Facebook and Twitter accounts as well.

Stay well and thank you for helping to keep our community safe.

Update as of March 23, 2020

  • Our facilities remain closed. All HFA accounts have been placed on hold and no payments will be withdrawn until we resume normal operations.
  • Three of our child-care centres are open for children of essential service providers. Individuals accessing childcare will be charged child-care fees on our regular weekly billing schedule.
  • The remainder of our child-care centres remain closed at this time. Those accounts have been placed on hold and no payments will be withdrawn until we resume normal business operations.

Update as of March 20, 2020

The Government of Manitoba’s announcement this morning regarding childcare was communicated to the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg just prior to the Province’s announcement going live. Please understand that this is emerging news. We are making plans with the Province to meet child-care demands for essential service families – as well as potentially your family – within the Province’s new limitations; however, not all of the details have yet been worked out.

Rest assured, we will let you know further details as soon as we receive them.

Thank you for your patience during this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,

Kent Paterson
President & CEO

Update as of March 17, 2020

Dear Families and Caregivers,

The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg has enjoyed the privilege of caring for children and their families for more than 140 years. We recognize the importance of early childhood education and the foundation it lays for social development, making friends and achieving one’s full potential.

As directed by the Province of Manitoba, effective March 20, 2020 at 6 pm, all our infant, preschool and school-age child-care centres will be closed. We will be placing all child-care accounts on hold until we resume normal operations. They will remain on hold until we resume regular business operations.

We will stay in constant contact with health professionals, community partners and staff as we learn information and make future decisions about resuming operations; however, the changing coronavirus landscape will dictate our ability to do that. To keep updated on new developments, please check this website and sign up for email updates at ywinnipeg.ca/consent.

New information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Thank you for being a part of our Y family, who we care about very much. We’ll get through this together.

March 16, 2020

Dear Members, Guests, and Supporters of our Y,

The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg offers a broad range of programs and services including Child Care, Employment Services, Day Camps, Newcomer Services, Community Initiatives, and Health, Fitness and Aquatic programs. We are a place where people come to de-stress and exercise, participate in programs, make friends, socialize, and achieve personal goals.

We serve thousands of people daily, both young and old, and all in between, and we do not want to put people at risk of contracting the highly infectious coronavirus (COVID-19). Therefore, the difficult decision has been made to close, until Monday April 13, 2020, all our:

  • Health, Fitness and Aquatics programs and facilities, including Spring Break Day Camps
  • On-site Community Initiatives programming
  • North Y Youth Centre programming

As our health, fitness & aquatics facilities are closed:

  • Health, Fitness and Aquatics memberships will automatically be put on hold for the duration of our closure. Your account will not be charged once this hold is logged in our system.
  • If you would like to cancel your membership, please email wpgcancel@ymanitoba.ca and we will process your cancellation when we are able. While we are working diligently to respond to all emails as quickly as possible, based on an increase in the volume of emails we are receiving, we may not be able to respond to your message as quickly as normal. We thank you for your patience.
  • Spring Break Day Camp has been cancelled. We will be issuing full refunds to anyone who has registered for these camps. We ask for your patience as we process these refunds.
  • Birthday parties – If you have booked a birthday party during our closure period (March 16-April 13), you will receive a full refund. We appreciate your patience as we work to process these refunds.

It is our hope that while we are closed, progress can be made in containing the virus. This decision, as difficult as it was to make, was to support the physical distancing guidelines from public health authorities, and address many other considerations which include the safety of our members, participants, families, children and staff, and those in high risk categories as coronavirus issues continue to unfold locally, nationally and internationally.

Currently our child cares will remain operational. We have reached out to the Provincial Public Health Office, specifically asking whether they recommend us closing child cares, and they did not come back with that recommendation. Therefore, all child care centres, with the exception of those in the Lord Selkirk School Division, remain open. It may seem inconsistent that we are keeping child care centres running while closing other facilities. However, we recognize that our child cares operate in controlled environments, working with smaller groups than the thousands who come to our HFA centres every day, and we recognize that our child care staff have training that will help them maintain their own health and the health of the children they care for. We are continuing to monitor the situation and staying in touch with provincial health officials and Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care.

We are doing our best to serve our community while balancing the unprecedented, ever-changing world that the coronavirus has placed us in.

We do not take this decision lightly, knowing as we do that it will cause unintended challenges and concerns for families. Please know that we are doing everything we can within our resources and abilities to treat this situation with the utmost thoughtfulness and care for all involved. We ask for your ongoing support of our efforts during this trying time. We encourage our members and participants to visit our website (www.ywinnipeg.ca) for information on membership and program payments.

We will stay in constant contact with health professionals, community partners and staff as we learn information and make future decisions. We hope to resume service after April 13, 2020; however, the changing coronavirus landscape will dictate our ability to do that. To keep updated on new developments, please check back here often and sign up for emails at ywinnipeg.ca/consent.

New information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Thank you for being a part of our Y family, who we care about very much. We’ll get through this together.
